    Dr Robert Cunney is a Consultant Microbiologist at the Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC) and at the Children's University Hospital, Temple Street, in Dublin, Ireland. He is Secretary of the Strategy for the control of Antimicrobial Resistance in Ireland (SARI), is a member of the Irish Health Services Executive's Healthcare-Associated Infection Taskforce and is also a member of a number of international committees dealing with antimicrobial resistance and healthcare associated infection. His main responsibilities at HPSC are coordinating national surveillance of antimicrobial resistance and antimicrobial consumption. He was closely involved in the development of national guidelines on hand hygiene in the healthcare setting, updated national guidelines on the control of MRSA and national recommendations on hospital antibiotic stewardship. He is also a member of the SARI subcommittee that is developing national antibiotic prescribing guidelines for general practitioners.
